Should the Turkish Get Up be a prerequisite to the Clean + Press…

Here’s why, from almost 20 years of doing the TGU I can definitively say they’re wrong. The Turkish Get Up teaches you and trains your body to do the following: 1. Where your shoulder “lives” in relation to the ground and your body 2. Mobilizes your shoulder, restoring lost ranges of motion like full shoulder flexion (putting your arm straight over your head 3. True or False: "You Can’t Outwork a Bad Diet”

Image
👉 https://go.chasingstrength.com/kettlebell-ghfl-4/ Years ago, in the old RKC system, we’d joke around with a saying, “You can’t out-snatch a donut.” It’s the same thing as “You can’t out-work a bad diet.” In other words, you can train hard, but if you [still] eat like a pig, you’re not going to see any changes in your appearance. In other words, you may get stronger, even a tad more muscular, but you’ll still be soft. And I think many people have accepted this as common wisdom. But is this actually TRUE? Is that why we secretly hold out hope that you actually CAN - “Watch in amazement as high-rep kettlebells let you hack the fat off your meat -- without the dishonor of aerobics and dieting” (Dragon Door advertisement for the “The Russian Kettlebell Challenge, Xtreme Fitness for Hard Living Comrades,” c. 2002) Like some of the early kettlebell training adopters claimed they had on the old DragonDoor forum circa 2000-02. Unfortunately, scientific research and most experience tell us th...

Here’s why SINGLE Kettlebell Workouts COULD be better for fat loss…

If you’re looking to burn off fat - including stomach fat AND build some muscle mass, thousands of guys have used this program successfully.  https://go.chasingstrength.com/burn-sa3/ (It includes a simple, customizable nutrition program to speed up your results.) But if you “just” want to burn off stomach fat (without adjusting your diet - but not continuing to eat like a pig), this program will do the trick. https://go.chasingstrength.com/kettlebell-ghfl-4/ Traditionally, I prefer double kettlebellworkouts for… everything. (Which I guess is why I’m considered “The Double Kettlebell Guy.”) However, last year, I ran across some interesting research that made me reconsider this stance. There’s a concept called “reflexive stability” that we discuss in movement restoration. Reflexive stability is your body’s ability to subconsciously anticipate and react to movement before and as it happens.   2016 research by Jaquish and Alkire demonstrated that increased demands in reflexiv...

How to get bigger arms using kettlebells (AND drop some bulge the middle)

Image
Kettlebell GHFL  https://go.chasingstrength.com/kettlebell-ghfl-4/ Kettlebell MAXIMORUM  https://go.chasingstrength.com/kettlebell-maximorum-e/ You go to pretty much any gym in the developed world, and guys will routinely focus on getting bigger pecs and bigger arms -  (“24 inch guns, baby!” - Hulk Hogan) For many guys, it’s a measure of their “manhood.” Me? “Back in the day,” arms were almost always included. Partially because extra meat on the triceps was supposed to make your bench go up. But now? Honestly, I could care less. Which is why I - [a]  Rarely write about getting “bigger gunz”  [b]  Never include direct arm work in my KB programs [c]  Never do direct arm work myself (nor haven’t for probably the last 25 years) But some dudes - maybe even you, {first_name}... Do care about putting some size on their arms. Now typically, most bodybuilding programs have specialized arm routines inside them to grow "dem arms." And one deceased strength coach ...
