Ever wonder how often to train a lift? There’s a good post about this over on the StrongFirst forum. Essentially, the OP wondered if training a lift 2x a week is better than 3x a lift. And that’s because, due to life’s circumstances, he got mentally burned out from training a lift 3x a week.  Well, that’s certainly one of the reasons why to switch from 3x a week to 2x a week - mental fatigue.  For som...

What about the chest?

Image
- Restore Your Shoulder Function:  https://go.chasingstrength.com/sjs-e-shoulder/ - Kettlebell & Bodyweight Program Using Parallel Dips to Build Your Chest  https://go.chasingstrength.com/rebuilt-after-40/   Growing up, THE “Manhood Test” Lift was always the Bench Press. “How much ya bench?” was a common question. It's even part of our common "meathead" vernacular. The Bench Press is pretty good at building up your chest (the pecs). It’s also good at destroying shoulders if you use it too much (along with one gajillion Push Ups). Worse, (maybe?) is when you do too much chest work and you look like you have a pair of breasts. ( True story: One of my old friends took his shirt off, and my jaw almost hit the ground because he’d done so much chest work, he literally looked like he had a pair of breasts.) But, kettlebell work? Not so much. But because we’ve been so conditioned by bodybuilding, we think we need to always train the chest. Hence, this email Chris from German...

Use this for single KB exercises.  https://salutis.kartra.com/page/BIG-6-w-bonus And this for double KB exercises (different rules than the singles). https://salutis.kartra.com/page/strong-ts And if you have great technique and still crave "hardcore"? Use these programs. https://cart.chasingstrength.com/hard3b If you’re like many of us, you probably have some kind of “hardcore” background or “bent” to your mindset when it comes to working out (training). Football gassers… Wrestling “shark tank”... Boot Camp… And as a result, we measure our workouts by how “tough” they are… How tired they make us. And the Iron Sports? Same thing. “Go Heavy or Go Home.” “Go Hard or Go Home.” “One more rep!” “It’s ALL YOU, BRUH!” You get the idea, right? For many of us, it’s pretty hard to change our viewpoint. It’s like we’ve been brainwashed ...

Let’s Unpack 3 Strategies You Can Use to AVOID This Trap. Which is better for Strength & Muscle - Cast Iron or Competition Kettlebells?

Combo of Single and Double KB for Recomposition: https://go.chasingstrength.com/kettlebell-maximorum-e/ “Hardcore” KB Programs to Challenge Your Mind and Your Manhood: https://cart.chasingstrength.com/hard3b Get Strong As An Ox: https://cart.chasingstrength.com/strong4 Strip Off Stomach Fat w/ a Single KB:  https://go.chasingstrength.com/burn-sa3/ I've had quite a few emails lately from guys asking me about this topic. So, in case you weren’t aware, there is a sport called Kettlebell Sport (GS - where the “G” stands for “Girya,” or Kettlebell) which sprung out of Russia and hit the US in the mid-2000s. Up until that time, the only types of kettlebells you could get were the cast iron “Strength & conditioning” type. This is most likely the standard shape kettlebell you’ve probably used or at least seen. Here’s what the Competition Bells look like: Now, honestly, I’ve only used Comp Bells a few times. And I like them. But I’ve always used the cast iron kind and prefer them. Here’...

Which Is BETTER - Half Snatches OR Snatches… Does it matter?

Image
“The King-Sized Killer” - https://cart.chasingstrength.com/ksk2   Do you know the difference between the two? And why it matters? I still remember the first time I snatched a kettlebell. It was a 32kg, and I completely disregarded Pavel’s advice to Snatch outdoors. Being a young, pride-filled 230 pound / 105kg Olympic lifter who’d recently qualified for the US National Championships, I thought I knew better. I ripped the kettlebell up over my head like a bag of feathers and it stalled momentarily bottom up. Then, it fell and smacked me on the back of the wrist and felt the exact opposite of a bag of feathers! My pride, and the hardwood floors of the apartment I was renting kept me from dropping the kettlebell.  So, bruised, but undeterred, I attempted another Snatch. And I had the same result. Except I’d already developed a goose egg on the back of my wrist from that first rep, which made the second rep nearly impossible to not drop. (Thankfully, I didn’t drop it.) Which bring...

Can you get STRONGER as you get Older...?

Image
- “The King-Sized Killer”: https://cart.chasingstrength.com/ksk2 - ‘THE GIANT’: https://salutis.kartra.com/page/OTU582 My paternal grandfather died at 61 from his second heart attack. His first was at 46. My maternal grandfather died at 73 from a stroke. He had a triple bypass ~10 years earlier. And my dad had a triple bypass at 56. (Thank God he’s still alive - about to be 79.) But the mindset of those two generations - The Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomers - is/was that getting old is “just the way it is.” Which is why I think a lot of guys over 40 today think their best days are behind them (just like their dads and granddads thought). And you know what? All of them are right, because the old adage is true: “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” - Proverbs 23:7 Which is why many guys over 40 today still languish in the doldrums of their later years… Quietly dying inside and out… Watching their bodies deteriorate before their very eyes, as if there’s nothing they can do a...

The BEST Core Exercise for YOU (And WHY it matters)

Image
CORE STRENGTH TESTS: https://salutis.kartra.com/page/DgM583 SYSTEMATIC CORE TRAINING FOR KETTLEBELLS: https://salutis.kartra.com/page/systematic-core-training Core training is still a hot topic these days. And rightfully so, because there is still A LOT of confusion surrounding it. For example: One of the reasons I went to my kettlebell instructor certification (the RKC) back in 2005 was because even though I could: Hold a Plank for 2 minutes Hold a Side-Bridge for 2 minutes Do Single Leg Hip Bridges on a stability ball for 2 sets of 20 Do Single Leg Touchdowns, standing on a half foam-roller for 2 sets of 20 using 25lb dumbbell (think Single Leg Deadlift, but your arm ends up over your head - kinda like a slow speed Snatch) Do Single Leg Chops & Lifts (on a “balance pad” - unstable surface) And any number of other “circus tricks” for my “core stability”and core strength... But I - [a] Still tore the labrum in my right hip… And more importantly to me at the time - [b] I still could...

10 Reasons Why Men Over 40 Grow Love Handles (and How to GET RID of THEM)

Image
Kettlebell Burn 2.0 -  https://go.chasingstrength.com/burn-sa3/ Lovehandles. The Spare Tire. The Middle Age Spread. Why do guys over 40 get these? And more importantly, why does conventional diet and exercise advice fail to get rid of these? And most importantly, what DOES get rid of them? First, up, why Over 40-somethings grow lovehandles: Well, it’s not just ONE thing - it’s a plethora of factors. (I love that word - plethora - makes me think of "The Three Amigos"...) Here are TEN (10!) Factors Explaining why: 1- Energy Surplus Pretty simple. We tend to eat too much and that fat has to be stored somewhere. Any long‑term gap between calories in and out is stored as triglycerides in your “flank” fat cells. 2- Genetics Genetics & sex hormones decide preferred "fat parking spots." The hip/flank depot is a common one. Some people are just wired to store more fat in their sides. 3- High Fat Cell Density This area holds more fat cells per square inch. Those fat cells...

Why one man’s Kettlebell STRENGTH program is another man’s FAT LOSS program…

Image
‘THE GIANT’ 3.0 https://salutis.kartra.com/page/oWP219 The Time-Tested Single Kettlebell Program https://go.chasingstrength.com/burn-sa3/ In this video we’re going to discuss 5 reasons why a kettlebell strength program for one man can be a kettlebell fat loss program for another. Do you remember one of the original promises of kettlebell training? When the book, The Russian Kettlebell Challenge was released, one of the selling points was the following - “Watch in amazement as high-rep kettlebells let you hack the fat off your meat -- without the dishonor of aerobics and dieting” It was fascinating to me because at the time when this was written - around 2001/2, the concept of “high reps to lose fat” was still prevalent. And yet, I was doing the OPPOSITE with my clients and myself. We’d use LOW REPS and still burn a bunch of fat, while getting stronger in the process. The truth is, BOTH can and do work. It just depends on the individual. For example, I got this email from Keith the o...
